What to Expect During a Concrete Project

Planning a concrete project, whether it’s a driveway, patio, or house surround, can feel overwhelming if you’ve never gone through the process before. Understanding what happens at each stage can help set clear expectations, reduce stress, and ensure everything runs smoothly.

Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of what homeowners can expect during a typical concrete project.

📝 1. Quoting & Site Inspection

Every project starts with a site visit and quote.

During this stage, your contractor will:

  • Measure the area

  • Assess site access

  • Check ground conditions

  • Discuss finishes (plain, exposed aggregate, decorative, etc.)

  • Identify any drainage considerations

A site visit may not be required for small and straight forward projects.

You’ll then receive a quote outlining:

  • Scope of works

  • Inclusions and exclusions

  • Pricing and payment terms

👉 Tip: Make sure everything you expect is clearly written in the quote to avoid confusion later.

📐 2. Planning & Scheduling

Once you accept the quote, the job is scheduled.

This stage involves:

  • Locking in a start date

  • Organising materials and labour

  • Coordinating any additional trades if required

Weather plays a big role in concrete work, so timelines may shift slightly if conditions aren’t suitable.

🚜 3. Site Preparation

Preparation is one of the most important parts of the job.

This typically includes:

  • Excavation to the required depth

  • Removal of soil, debris, or existing concrete

  • Installation and compaction of the base material

👉 A well-prepared base is critical to prevent movement and cracking later on.

🧱 4. Formwork & Reinforcement

Next, the structure of the slab is set up.

This involves:

  • Installing formwork (frames that shape the concrete)

  • Setting correct levels and falls for drainage

  • Placing reinforcement (steel mesh or rebar)

At this stage, everything is aligned to ensure:

  • Proper water runoff

  • Correct slab thickness

🚿 5. The Concrete Pour

This is the most visible part of the process.

On pour day:

  • Concrete is delivered and poured into the prepared area

  • It is spread, levelled, and compacted

  • The surface is finished based on the chosen style

Depending on the finish:

  • Plain concrete is finished with a trowel or broom

  • Exposed aggregate is later washed to reveal the stones

👉 This stage usually takes a few hours, depending on the size of the job.

🧼 6. Finishing & Detailing

After the initial pour:

  • Control joints are cut to manage cracking if required

For exposed aggregate:

  • The surface is washed (sometimes the next day) to expose the stone

This is where the final look really comes together.

⏳ 7. Curing Process

Concrete doesn’t just “dry”—it cures over time.

During this stage:

  • The concrete gains strength

  • Moisture slowly evaporates

  • The surface stabilises

Typical timelines:

  • 24–48 hours: Light foot traffic

  • 7 days: Partial strength

  • 28 days: Full cure

👉 Proper curing is essential for durability and long-term performance.

🚫 8. Aftercare & Restrictions

To protect your new concrete:

  • Avoid heavy loads for at least 7 days

  • Keep vehicles off driveways for 7–14 days

  • Avoid dragging sharp or heavy objects

Following these guidelines helps prevent early damage.

🧴 9. Sealing (If Required)

Some finishes, especially exposed aggregate, require sealing.

Sealing:

  • Enhances colour

  • Protects against stains

  • Improves longevity

This is usually done:

  • 1–4 weeks after the pour, once the concrete has properly cured

⚠️ 10. What’s Normal (and What’s Not)

It’s important to understand what’s considered normal with concrete:

Normal:

  • Hairline cracks

  • Slight colour variations

  • Minor surface imperfections

Not Normal:

  • Major cracking or sinking

  • Water pooling due to incorrect falls

  • Significant structural issues

👉 If you notice anything concerning, contact your contractor early.

💬 Communication is Key

A successful concrete project isn’t just about the physical work. It’s also about clear communication.

Make sure you:

  • Ask questions if you’re unsure

  • Raise concerns early

  • Understand timelines and expectations
